GARNEAU OPEN HOUSE SERVES UP SUMMER FUN & COMMUNITY SPIRIT

 May 10th, 2025

The Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball Club kicked off its summer season with an exciting Open House event on May 10th, 2025, designed to welcome new members and showcase everything the club has to offer. Held on a sunny Saturday afternoon, the event invited Edmontonians of all ages to come explore the club, check out all the vendors, meet the community, and get a taste of tennis and beach volleyball in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The event began with an introduction from Club President Jonathan Pearson, who emphasized the club’s commitment to inclusivity, recreation, and community spirit. Attendees were then invited to join in a series of drop-in activities led by experienced instructors. From beginner tennis drills to casual beach volleyball games in the sand, there was something for everyone—whether they were trying a sport for the first time or brushing up on their skills.

On the tennis courts, instructors guided newcomers through basic strokes, footwork, and rallying techniques, offering personal tips and encouragement throughout. Meanwhile, the beach volleyball area was buzzing with energy as groups rotated through friendly, low-pressure games—many discovering just how much fun the sport can be when played outdoors on a summer day.

Adding to the excitement, several vendors were on-site to connect with the community and showcase their products and services. Yonex and Wilson featured high-performance tennis gear and demo racquets for guests to try out on the spot. Kinetic Living offered wellness and recovery tips for active lifestyles, while the Edmonton Tennis Community (ETC) shared upcoming half-day junior summer camps in partnership with Garneau, junior & adult program information, and resources for players of all ages. The vendor area provided an engaging space to learn, win prizes, and chat with representatives who are passionate about growing the game and supporting active communities. To top it all off, Garneau hosted a complimentary barbecue, where dedicated volunteers Thuy Cao and Sonny Nguyen cooked up delicious burgers and hot dogs, adding a delicious touch to the event and bringing everyone together over great food.

ETC volunteer and long-time member Kris Cao reflected on the day’s success:

"It was fantastic to see so many people out enjoying the tennis courts. Garneau has always been about more than just sports—it’s about bringing people together. Events like this really show what our community is all about."

In total, over 250 visitors stopped by throughout the day, with many signing up for summer programs and memberships on the spot. Visitors left with smiles, new friends, prizes, and  information on how to get involved with the vendors and clubs.

The Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball Club’s Open House was more than just an introduction—it was a celebration of outdoor activity, community spirit, and the start of another exciting season. With ongoing lessons, tournaments, and events scheduled throughout the summer, Garneau is ready to welcome both returning players and fresh faces to the court and the sand!
