BEAUMONT TRY TENNIS EVENT

April 5, 2025

The FREE ‘Try Tennis’ event at the Beaumont Sport & Recreation Centre was a huge success, bringing together the community, promoting healthy activity, and introducing children and youth to the exciting world of tennis. This memorable day hosted by Edmonton Tennis Community (ETC) was made possible through partnerships with the City of Beaumont and Tennis Alberta, which played a key role in ensuring the event was not only fun, but also educational and inclusive.
The venue, which is regularly used by ETC for tennis programs all year round, provided the perfect backdrop for a day of tennis fun. From the moment the kids stepped into the gym, it was clear that this event would leave a lasting impression.
Tennis Alberta’s involvement was central to the event’s success. As the provincial organization dedicated to the growth of tennis in Alberta, Tennis Alberta has been instrumental in supporting the programs to get kids playing tennis from a young age. Their role in the ‘Try Tennis’ event was part of their larger strategy to engage youth in the sport and foster the development of young players.
ETC coaches and volunteers, including members of Tennis Alberta, were on hand to guide the 45 children and youth through a variety of stations, each designed to focus on different aspects of the game. From basic ball control and footwork to improving rally skills, each station offered an opportunity for the children to build their tennis abilities. The kids were divided into smaller groups based on their age and skill level, ensuring that everyone was able to progress at their own pace.
For the youngest participants, ages 4 to 7, the focus was on building coordination and having fun with the sport. Simple drills using soft tennis balls helped these little ones get a feel for the game and develop their basic motor skills. Meanwhile, the more experienced players, ages 8 to 15, had the chance to refine their techniques through more advanced drills, working on improving their serve, backhand, and forehand strokes.
In addition to the skill-building activities, the event also featured friendly mini-competitions. These non-competitive games allowed participants to test their skills in a fun, relaxed environment while building teamwork and sportsmanship. For many of the children, this was their first experience with tennis, and they embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm and energy!
“The event was welcoming, energetic, and supportiveIt was designed to be fun and relaxed, especially for beginners. Events like this promote healthy lifestyles, build connections, make sports accessible, and encourage individuals to try a new sport. Overall, it’s about fun, inclusion, and community spirit”, said Matt Neufeld, City of Beaumont – Sports & Recreation Team Lead.
