The ‘Try Tennis’ event, hosted by the Edmonton Tennis Community (ETC) in collaboration with St. Thomas More School, provided a fantastic opportunity for students ages 5-15 to experience tennis in a fun, low-pressure environment. The goal was to introduce kids to the sport for the first time, helping them build essential skills and confidence. With a focus on inclusivity, the event was designed for all skill levels, from complete beginners to those with some tennis experience.
The evening began with a warm welcome from Karina Trkulja, Executive Director of ETC, followed by engaging and interactive drills led by experienced ETC coaches. The activities focused on fundamental tennis skills such as grip, footwork, and proper swing techniques. Coaches worked closely with the participants, ensuring each child received personal attention and encouragement throughout the session. To top off the experience, every child left the event with a prize, making it even more special and rewarding for everyone involved.
ETC’s Program Coordinator, Shaylea Mohr, shared her excitement about the evening: “It was amazing to see the kids so engaged and excited about tennis. Whether they were learning to hit their first forehand or just having fun with their friends, the energy was contagious. We hope this event encourages more young players to continue exploring the sport.”
In conclusion, the April 2nd ‘Try Tennis’ event at St. Thomas More School was a resounding success, drawing over 25 children and youth for an evening of learning, fun, and new experiences. Thanks to the strong partnership between the school, coaches, and parents, local youth now have even more opportunities to get involved in tennis. Be sure to stay tuned for upcoming events aimed at inspiring and engaging the next generation of tennis players!
